Cornus mas

One of the dogwoods is in bloom! Wait - not Cornus florida or our beloved Cornus kousa. We'll have to wait until June and Dogwood Days for that. It's Cornus mas that is displaying its lovely late winter yellow flowers. While not as large and intense as forsythia blooms, Cornus mas blooms occur earlier and cover the entire plant. A small tree (20' at maturity) with edible fruit, attractive and compact branching, Cornus mas is a great addition to even small-sized yards.
